Millions of buildings, landmarks and monuments across 188 countries and territories switched off their lights for an hour to support the World Wildlife Fund’s global initiative, while the hashtags Connect2Earth and EarthHour generated more than two billion impressions.
Our support for Earth Hour
At Knauf Insulation, non-essential lights were switched off at some of our plants as well as all lights in non-manufacturing bases including our HQ.
We also encouraged our 5,500 colleagues to join friends and families and switch off lights at home for 60 minutes in all the countries in which we do business.
Our Director of External Affairs, Sîan Hughes, said: “Earth Hour is a simple but highly dramatic way to focus the world’s attention on action to reduce the world’s carbon footprint.
“Of course, I wish that this message was at the front of everybody’s thoughts for 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day, but Earth Hour is a perfect opportunity to show that we can always do better.”
Why Earth Hour matters
The initiative started as a lights-off event in Sydney 12 years ago and has now become a major global event. Next year’s Earth Hour will be held on March 28 at 8:30pm local time in participating countries.
Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International, described Earth Hour as “a powerful opportunity to start an unstoppable movement for nature to help secure an international commitment to stop and reverse the loss of nature – a New Deal for Nature and People as comprehensive and ambitious as the global climate deal”.
• Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Knauf Insulation. Every product we create is designed to lower emissions. Every campaign we support is designed to make buildings more energy efficient. Everyone is committed to a more sustainable future.
